Armored Chevrolet Suburban vs Cadillac Escalade ESV

Same GM platform, same 6.2L V8, very different cabins. How the armored Chevrolet Suburban and Cadillac Escalade ESV compare.

The Chevrolet Suburban and the Cadillac Escalade ESV are the two full-size SUVs our armored executive fleet is built on. On paper they look like rivals. Underneath, they are close relatives. This article sets out what they share, where they differ, and what that means once the vehicle is armored.

One platform, two personalities

Both vehicles belong to General Motors' GMT T1XX full-size platform, the generation launched for the 2021 model year. The Suburban and the long-wheelbase Escalade ESV share the same 134.1-inch (3,406 mm) wheelbase. Both use independent rear suspension, which replaced the solid rear axle of earlier generations, lowered the floor and freed up cabin space.

The engine: the same V8

The 6.2-litre V8 is the same in both: 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) of torque, through a 10-speed automatic. On the Suburban it is optional on some trims and standard on the High Country. Either way, it is the engine both of our armored SUVs run on.

That reserve of torque matters in an armored vehicle. Armoring adds substantial weight, so a strong engine, together with the upgraded suspension and brakes our vehicles are fitted with, is what keeps an armored SUV feeling like an ordinary one on the road.

Where they differ: the cabin

The difference between the two is in the cabin, not under the hood.

Cadillac Escalade ESV. From the 2025 model year, the Escalade has a 55-inch curved display running from pillar to pillar. The standard sound system is a 19-speaker AKG Studio. A 36-speaker AKG Studio Reference system is available, and it grows to 40 speakers with the Executive Second Row package. Upper trims add Magnetic Ride Control and Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance comes with a three-year subscription as standard.

Chevrolet Suburban. The 2025 refresh brought a 17.7-inch infotainment screen and an 11-inch driver display. Upper trims offer Magnetic Ride Control and Air Ride Adaptive Suspension, which offers selectable ride heights.

In short: the Escalade ESV is the more luxurious cabin, while the Suburban is the proven workhorse.

Why the Suburban is the government standard

The Suburban nameplate dates to the 1930s and is the longest-running automotive nameplate in the world. It is also the standard vehicle for protecting senior officials:

  • The US Secret Service operates fully armored Suburbans.
  • For the 2016 model year, GM built a heavy-duty Suburban 3500HD sold only to fleets, with a gross vehicle weight rating of 11,000 lb (about 5,000 kg). It was meant for conversion into armored transport.
  • GM Defense builds the Suburban Shield for the US Diplomatic Security Service. Its armor is integrated during the vehicle's initial build rather than added afterwards. In November 2023 GM Defense received a contract with a ceiling of $300 million, and the first production Shield was completed in October 2024.

How we use them

In our fleet, both the Escalade ESV and the Suburban are armored for 360° protection to a European standard, and seat a driver and five passengers. The armoring uses multi-layer ballistic glass, armoring of the battery and ECM, and fuel tank protection, with every ballistic material tested and approved by specialized ballistic testing laboratories.

The choice between them is about the trip, not the protection:

  • Escalade ESV: for guests who expect the highest level of comfort and finish.
  • Suburban: the classic executive-protection vehicle, as used by government security services.
